Abstract:

In this lecture Corine Visscher will present the possibilities for Physical Therapy in the patient care of patients with a Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD).

For various TMD subtypes, she will present the various treatment modalities physical therapists can apply as part of the multidisciplinary treatment of TMD patients.

More specifically, she will discuss physical therapy treatment options for patients withan anterior disc displacement without reduction (or ‘closed lock’), hypermobility with luxation (or ‘open lock’), arthralgia and myalgia (with or without movement limitations).

Recommendations will be provided for the decision whether a patient could be treated in primary care or should be referred to more specialized care givers.

Also the principles of pain education for chronic pain patients will be introduced.
